"One of our finish mills has experienced fatigue cracking on the mill shell for several years.  All attempts to repair these areas were unsuccessful until we sought the assistance of Alma Olsen.  Alma was able to provide us with technical oversight and eventually train our own personnel on complex weld repairs which helped us resolve this problem short term.  He has also helped us successfully repair a repeated cracking problem on the frame of our tracked dozer.  All pervious attempts at this repair under the direction of the OEM were unsuccessful.  Alma is always professional and communicates very well with our maintenance technicians.  We also utilize Alma for hands on welding training for our mechanics and our people learn a tremendous amount from his instruction and teaching methods."

 To Whom It May Concern;

In April of 2008, a crack was discovered in the feed end of our 18 foot by 28 foot ball mill. The crack was observed approximately 180 degrees around the shell body and had a maximum opening of one and one half inches.

The representative for the mill manufacturer was contacted for advice and assistance. Further, a local welding contractor recommended we also contact Alma Olsen, with who had worked on specialized projects in the area.

The first equipment representative offered no help and admitted that the task was beyond his skills. A second representative arrived at the same time as Alma and was sent away as it was clearly evident he didn’t grasp our grave situation.

The equipment distributer offered a “patch” and wanted us to purchase a new mill.

After an extensive evaluation Alma discovered that the crack had actually propagated 360 degrees and had initiated from the inside diameter of the 2 inch shell wall.  (He also discovered the same situation had started at the feed end of the mill).

Alma advised us that the unit could be repaired and quickly assembled a team of welders who he directed throughout the 21 day (24 hour per day) repair period.

Alma saved our bacon. Not only did he fix the mill, his repair procedures corrected a problem caused during the original manufacture of the mill.

I would recommend Alma’s services in a heartbeat.

Yours truly,

Tim G. Smith,

Since 1998 when Alma Olsen became the Weld Engineer where I worked, we have worked closely on many projects and continued to do so even after he left and started his own business of specialized consulting services which included failure analysis, project analysis and management, NDT testing, precision field repair of large machinery and company specific-result orientated welder training, which included qualification, NDT instruction and training, and principles of fabrication, safety, and cost effectiveness, and specification/code interpretation.  The scopes of industries included were in a range from large military contracts, mining equipment, energy, production shops, and engineering.  His knowledge, work ethic, and can do mentality is what gives me the motivation for writing this recommendation.

The fact that when others attitudes of “it can’t be done “come to play, Alma steps up and consistently develops a plan of action that has saved companies substantial resources.  Not only once but repeatedly has made extensive weld repairs in the field on extremely large machinery that “couldn’t be done” due to tight tolerances, measured in the thousands, so it could function and did function as it was meant to.  Being able to communicate concepts to workers and management in such a way that results in successful accomplishment of detailed projects, gives credibility to all I have said.

Due to extent of Alma’s accomplishments, if more detailed information would be required I am willing to field any questions, so feel free to contact me.

Regards, Allan

Seabee
Hampton Hydraulics

To Whom It May Concern:
Looking for a welding engineer, Alma Olsen was recommended to Seabee by our sister
company, RamRod Industries from Spencer, WI in 2004.
We have retained Alma on a contract basis since November of 2004.
Seabee is a custom hydraulic cylinder manufacturer with emphasis on large cylinders.
Our customer focus is on heavy lifting, mining and off-shore industries.
Alma’s years of experience and certifications in the welding aspects related to these
industries has helped us to become one of the leaders in this field.
Alma guided us to set up our welder training program, procedure qualifications,
performance qualifications, NDT procedures and advises us on equipment as well as
consumables needs and purchases. He reviews operator and equipment performance
and efficiency and recommends any improvements to be made.
We use Alma for failure analysis and rely on him for compliance with the strict controls
involved with government contracts.
I personally serve with Alma on an American Welding Society code committee and
enjoy the experience and dedication he brings to the table.
